About Nelson
The town
Nelson is the largest municipality in the Regional District of Central Kootenay, with about 11,100 people in 2021 on just 12 km² of land. It sits on the West Arm of Kootenay Lake in the Selkirk Mountains, on the unceded territory of the Sinixt, Syilx and Ktunaxa peoples. The city grew from a silver rush that began on nearby Toad Mountain in 1886, was incorporated in 1897, and had the first hydroelectric plant in BC. It still runs its own power utility, Nelson Hydro. Kootenay Lake Hospital, a community hospital with a 24-hour emergency department, surgery and maternity care, is in town, and the RDCK's head office is on Lakeside Drive. The city issues its own building permits.
Around it
Rural land around Nelson falls under the RDCK: Electoral Area E (Balfour, Procter, Sunshine Bay) and Area F (Beasley, Taghum, Willow Point, Bonnington), where the regional district handles permits and zoning. Kokanee Creek Park, 19 km east on Highway 3A, has sandy beaches, four campgrounds and a kokanee spawning channel. The Kootenay Lake ferry leaves from Balfour, 35 km east. Kokanee Glacier Park, one of BC's oldest parks, covers about 32,000 hectares between Slocan and Kootenay lakes and is reached by forest roads. Salmo, on Highway 3, is about 30 minutes south, and scheduled flights leave from the airport at Castlegar.
